HARD-TO-HEAR HAIKU

HARD-TO-HEAR HAIKU

(Adult Topic)

Become impotent

His fading manhood laments…

But what is inside?

-JEC

Little feeling left,

No place left to vent the ache…

Must thinking change, too?

–JEC

Engorgement all gone,

Being faithful accepts lack…

No one left to love.

–JEC

How to love without?

Can a man still be a man”’

His woman knows that!

–JEC

Appreciates form,

Less likely liquid lusting…

Why keep the old ways?

–JEC

Is safer this way…

For all women that he sees,

Much less threatening!

–JEC

Power lust remains,

That…no non-phallic can cure…

Bad apples near tree.

PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS

PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS

The doctor removed the bone chip

Whose blood made the nurse flip…

He was blamed

For the quantity of same,

Reputation has that strong a grip!

THE PLATEAU

THE PLATEAU

Why does he not progress,

AĀ  subconscious reason I’d guess…

Gets less attention,

Social intervention,

Riding on the healing express?

–Jonathan Caswell

IT’S HOMEBOUND FOR ME!

IT’S HOMEBOUND FOR ME!

I heard the cute young nurse say,

If I wanted the V.N.A.*…

Couldn’t drive my car

Or go very far–

She caught in the act, anyway.

She warned that theĀ V.N.A.*

Legally could not stay…

If from hence

There was evidence,

Homebound status had gone away!

–Jonathan Caswell

*the local Visiting Nurse Association…doing home visits for (my) medical care….wound care and bandaging my foot, for example.

A MAN’S POINT OF VIEW–CONVALESCING

A MAN’S POINT OF VIEW–CONVALESCING

(Adult Topic)

Older man gazing

On fields once grazing…

Young woman’s form

Makes him forlorn,

But it he’s silently praising.

Nursing re-wraps his foot

Twice a day–healing is good…

Young and lean

Nurses beam

As they professionally would.

All women he admires,

Nurses especially inspire…

Wonders uncapped

For this body he’s wrapped

In, with which his age conspires!

–Jonathan Caswell

IT’S HER CALL!

IT’SĀ HER CALL!

I’m laid up–she does the shopping–

Variety is not stopping…

I asked for slices

But her own devices

Got shredded cheese for soup topping!

HIATUS UNEXPECTED

HIATUS UNEXPECTED

(or…where I’ve been for a week and a half)

My hiatus unexpected

Was by my big toe directed…

While on a work round

My legs fell down,

My need needed to be dissected.

In ambulance eventually,

To hospital all agreed…

Big toe amputated,

It’s life prorated

As being no good to me.

Started treatment my selfĀ  then ignored,

Left it to rot to the core…

Infection set in

And I didn’t win,

Was left with a hole, nothing more.

From hospital to Rehab.

For a week or so to grab…

Some healing time

And therapy fine,

The nurses weren’t half-bad!

Yesterday I came home,

My wife is not alone…

Taken out the trash,

Consolidated cash

And learned…not to roam.

Gotta wait for the Visiting Nurses

By writing these tentative verses…

Evaluation

Of my situation

Before insurance opens its purses!

Unforseen experiences,

Puts minds through all tenses…

Ideas for a book

Began to cook,

Perhaps it will mend a few fences.

A FEW PARALLELS

A FEW PARALLELS

Not something he’d admit to saying,

His privacy betraying….

But folks might know

An infected toe

Ain’t the best way of gaining!

His leg was involved before,

The other leg for them keeping score….

Could no longer do

What he’s been through,

A Security job came to the fore.

Was stuck at an in-and-out gate,

A madhouse when shift change made haste…

Flashing I.D.’s

At double-time speed,

Where laborers egged on work mates.

He grew increasingly sad,

He never thought it would be this bad…

Walking’s a chore

And isn’t fun anymore,

He’d ignored all the warnings he’d had.

The toe–twice as wide–

With ugliness undescribed…

His wife helps wash and dress

The smelly mess,

Putrid-looking for what lurks inside.

He thought he’d bounce right back,

After a weekend flat on his back…

Getting enough sleep

Generally keeps

Him running on the right track.

Doctors say it’s long-term

Recovery, which makes him squirm…

Not able to stand

For very long on demand,

He doesn’t want being infirm.

He worries about work,

Walking rounds he’d rather not shirk…

It has been weeks

Since he felt in the peak

Of condition to do ALL his work!

He fears the great parallel,

Will his working find its death knell…

How long will guys

Face unpleasant surprise,

When he can’t do the job very well?

–Jonathan Caswell

STATE OF HIS BODY ADDRESSED

STATE OF HIS BODY ADDRESSED

He hadn’t prepared for THIS,

His body was obviously amiss…

Legs shooting pain

With swollen disdain,

He’d face aĀ  lot more to contain.

Exhaustion darkens the eyes

From little sleep–no surprise…

Making his way

Through life every day

And keeping his doctors apprised.

Doesn’t feel fine or foxy,

Got his own supply of oxy*…

Muscular hurts

The oxy* skirts,

A band-aid like two-part epoxy.

Struggle forward he must,

In his doctors’ advice he must trust…

Efforts increase

Or life quality’llĀ cease,

To be stiffened by encroaching rust!

I’m not sure his wife understands

Why he vocalizes her demands…

Getting so mean,

Making a scene,

Her pain…stays under her command.

He’s paying the price of duress

For not acting wiser, I guess…

Struggling for years.

One thing is clear–

It was never seriously addressed!

–Jonathan Caswell

* oxy…short for the pain-killer, oxycodone-acetaminophen.

FORBIDDEN FAVORITE FOODS

FORBIDDEN FAVORITE FOODS

(Mostly as Haiku)

Diet swords crossed

Winning control of his fare…

Far-reaching food fight!

Super-Special sub,

Three meats, lettuce and cheese…

Scrumptiously okay!

StillĀ  buying candy,

Pretzels for a rainy day…

Edema won’t leave!

Low-salt, high fiber

Candy bars masquerading…

Wise ones watch labels!

Complimentary,

Small portions of chips…

Regular soda!

Convenience kills,

Easily lost is control…

Salt and sugar win!

Eating half only,

Sandwiches enjoyed longer….

Maybe wife gets some!

Meatloaf and gravy, rare,

Mass. Turnpike revelation…

Suddenly set right!

Candy corn for kids,

Bag closed carefully between…

Cheating doesn’t help!

Diabetic mood

Carbohydrate-tidal force…

Glucose levels swing!
