ANNIE’S GONE AWAY
Annie Grondin’s gone away,
By this morning’s light…
There’s not much that we can say
But a fond goodnight.
–
Suffered with cancer did she long,
Her family rallied ’round…
Glad to see them in her final days
For they couldn’t always be found.
–
Her voice reminded me of folk,
My South Street relatives’ clan…
Her shaky twang spoke of home
In southern New England.
–
As a neighbor she was fine
‘Though she smoked like a chimney pot…
It seems to have gotten her in the end,
A case of lung cancer rot.
